Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Meta Platforms, revealed that 10 million people have subscribed to the “Threads” application within 7 hours of its launch.
Zuckerberg’s tweet marks his first since 2012 and follows days of challenge between Musk and the Meta founder.
“Threads” capitalizes on a series of missteps taken by Twitter since Musk acquired the company for $44 billion in October. As the world’s richest person, he has laid off thousands of employees, relaxed content moderation policies, and subjected users and advertisers to a series of technical challenges.
In its latest controversial policy change, Twitter limited the number of tweets users can view daily, as a measure to combat data scraping and bots, according to Musk.
Users can create a Threads account using their existing Instagram account, retaining the same username. They can also follow the same accounts they follow on Instagram. The application allows users to share text posts of up to 500 characters, as well as images and videos up to 5 minutes long.
On Wednesday, Zuckerberg wrote in a post on Threads, “There should be an app for public conversations with over a billion people. Twitter had the chance to do it but failed. We hope to succeed.”
It is worth noting that Meta will not release the Threads platform in the European Union as the company awaits regulatory guidelines for data sharing between the new platform and its own Instagram.
