Recent data released by the UK Home Office reveals a significant influx of over 10,000 migrants arriving in the United Kingdom via the English Channel since the beginning of this year.
This figure surpasses the records documented during the same period in 2022, which stood at 9,326 migrants, according to Sky News.
The surge in arrivals also exceeds those recorded during the corresponding period last year, which saw 7,326 migrants reaching the UK shores.
Sky News reported that May 1st of this year witnessed the highest number of Channel crossings in a single day, with 711 migrants arriving.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had pledged to halt migrant boats and prioritize combating illegal immigration.
However, the new record numbers suggest that the plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda has not served as a sufficient deterrent to prevent migrants from undertaking perilous crossings via the Channel.
The English Channel, separating the UK from mainland Europe, has become a focal point for migrants seeking entry into Britain.
Despite efforts by UK authorities to curb irregular migration, the number of arrivals has continued to rise, highlighting the challenges in managing migration flows and securing the UK’s borders.
