The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported today, Monday, that the Conoco gas field base, operated by the International Coalition forces in northern Deir ez-Zor, Syria, was hit by a heavy rocket attack. This assault, which occurred shortly after midnight on Sunday, is believed to have originated from Iranian-supported militias.
According to the Observatory, headquartered in London, the American base at the Conoco gas field in eastern Syria was struck by approximately 15 rockets, marking one of the most severe bombardments from within Syrian territory to date. As of now, there have been no reports of human casualties.
Additionally, the Observatory indicated that a drone, presumably operated by these militias, also attacked the Omar oil field base, another facility used by the Coalition in eastern Deir ez-Zor, shortly after midnight.
Explosions were heard in the area of the Al-Shaddadi base, belonging to Coalition forces in the Al-Hasakah countryside, amid reports of targeting by armed militias. The Observatory noted that “violent explosions occurred after midnight in the vicinity of the city of Mayadin in the Deir ez-Zor countryside, coinciding with ongoing fires in the area. This was concurrent with rocket shells falling on the Omar field base, the largest American base in Syria.”
In response, the United States Department of Defense, the Pentagon, announced yesterday that the U.S. military had struck two facilities in eastern Syria used by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and Iran-aligned groups. This action was a response to the “ongoing attacks” against American personnel in Iraq and Syria.
In recent weeks, Iran-aligned militias have intensified their attacks on American military bases in Syria and Iraq. This surge in hostility is seen as a retaliation against the Israeli military campaign in Gaza. The situation underscores the complex and volatile dynamics in the region, with multiple actors influencing the geopolitical landscape. The ongoing conflicts in Syria and Iraq are deeply intertwined with broader regional tensions, especially involving Iran’s influence and the presence of U.S. and Coalition forces in these areas.
