At an unauthorized block party in a city park in Memphis, two men were fatally shot and six others were injured on Saturday night, according to police.
The Memphis Police Department initially reported that 16 individuals had been shot, but later corrected this figure on social media, explaining that some victims had been counted multiple times.
The shooting was first reported at 7:19 p.m., with police responding to the scene, Chief Cerelyn Davis explained in a press briefing.
At the scene, two men were found deceased, and another individual was critically injured.
The event, which took place at Orange Mound Park, was attended by approximately 200 to 300 people without an official city permit.
Chief Davis condemned the violence, emphasizing the community’s united stance against such acts.
As of the latest updates, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting.
Last March, a person was killed and five others, including a police officer, were injured in a shooting in the city of Indianapolis, Indiana.
Local media quoted Indianapolis Police Department Chief Christopher Bailey as saying during a press conference that two police officers in full uniform were working off-duty at a bar when a disturbance occurred in the parking lot outside the bar at around 1:30 a.m. local time.
According to local channel Fox 32, the two officers exchanged gunfire with one of the suspects, with one officer being shot in the upper thigh but is expected to recover.
