Two individuals lost their lives in distinct shooting incidents overnight in Brussels, as law enforcement officials confront a notable increase in drug-related offenses within the city.
Gunshots reverberated through the Laeken district situated in the northern reaches of the Belgian capital, where authorities discovered one individual deceased, according to statements from a police spokesperson.
In a separate incident occurring hours later, another victim succumbed to injuries sustained in a shooting near the city center, as confirmed by another police spokesperson.
Since February, Brussels has witnessed a string of approximately six shootings, believed to be linked to drug trafficking, with one resulting in a fatality. This surge in violence coincides with a growing prevalence of crack cocaine usage on the city’s streets.
While gang violence associated with the illicit drug trade has long plagued Belgium’s Antwerp port, which serves as Europe’s primary entry point for cocaine, the capital had previously experienced relative respite from such incidents.
Responding to mounting pressure, Brussels authorities unveiled a comprehensive strategy on February 27 aimed at addressing the escalating violence described by senior security official Sophie Lavaux as “unacceptable” encroachment on the city’s streets.
