In a recent development, armed clashes erupted in the Al-Qawasim area of Gharyan city, located south of Tripoli, Libya, on Saturday evening.
The incident was reported by a Sputnik correspondent in the African country.
According to a confidential source who spoke to Sputnik, the violent confrontation resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left several others injured, one of whom is in critical condition.
The source revealed that the clashes were a consequence of ongoing armed conflicts within the city.
Libya continues to grapple with widespread violence and the prevalence of armed clashes in various cities and regions, particularly in the western part of the country.
This persistent instability is largely attributed to the proliferation of armed factions and militias that dominate most cities and areas in western Libya.
Last April, Tripoli, the capital of Libya, witnessed the outbreak of clashes among competing armed factions, a recurring scene that disrupts the city’s peace intermittently.
The sudden skirmishes, which lasted for about an hour, occurred without clear reasons or known casualties. These clashes took place in densely populated central areas of the capital where residents were celebrating the second day of the Eid al-Fitr holiday.
Local media reports suggest the clashes followed the arrest of a State Security apparatus member by the Judicial Police, which then led to retaliatory arrests of Detention Force members.
On a separate note, the Libyan authorities recently deported 59 undocumented migrants from various nationalities, including individuals diagnosed with AIDS and hepatitis.
This action, taken by the Anti-Illegal Immigration Department in Tobruk, highlights ongoing challenges in managing migrant health and safety in the region.
In a statement, the department disclosed that the deported migrants comprised six Sudanese nationals, including one person with AIDS, and two Nigerian nationals.
