Morocco, situated in a seismically active region, faced yet another aftershock, registering a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter scale, striking the Marrakech region in the southern-central part of the country earlier today. The tremors were perceptible to the local population.
According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the aftershock occurred at 06:53 local time and was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers.
This seismic activity follows four aftershocks experienced in Morocco yesterday, ranging between magnitudes 3 and 3.5 on the Richter scale in the Houz region. These tremors caused rocks to fall, leading to an injury of a cameraman from a television channel. Authorities promptly urged residents and media crews to evacuate the affected area.
Morocco’s Ministry of the Interior reported a total of 2,946 fatalities and 5,674 injuries resulting from the devastating earthquake. Among the deceased, 2,944 have been buried. The majority of casualties occurred in the Houz region, where 1,684 lives were lost, and in the Taroudant region, where 980 fatalities were recorded. Thankfully, no new fatalities were reported in other affected cities and regions.
The statement from the ministry emphasized that specialized authorities continue their efforts to care for the injured, shelter the affected individuals, and provide them with essential food and medical aid. Furthermore, they are working diligently to restore traffic on roads affected by the earthquake, while simultaneously mobilizing all necessary resources to address the consequences of this tragic event.
In the aftermath of the main earthquake, Morocco experienced several aftershocks, causing further distress and fear among the affected communities. These aftershocks are a common occurrence after a major seismic event, and they can be unpredictable in terms of their timing and intensity.
The Moroccan government and various relief agencies have been working tirelessly to respond to the crisis. They have focused on providing immediate medical assistance to the injured, ensuring that displaced individuals have access to shelter and food, and assessing the extent of the damage to plan for reconstruction efforts.
The tragedy has not only affected the physical landscape of affected regions but has also left an emotional impact on the people of Morocco. The loss of lives, injuries, and damage to homes and businesses have taken a toll on the affected communities.
