At least five civilians were killed today (Wednesday) in Russian shelling on the cities of Kherson and Kharkiv in Ukraine, while a civilian was killed in shelling on the Russian border area of Belgorod, according to Agence France-Presse.
Two civilians were killed today in Russian shelling near the city of Kherson in southern Ukraine, which has been witnessing near-daily strikes, according to the region’s governor, while overnight attacks injured several people in the country’s eastern heartland, AFP reported.
Governor Oleksandr Brovko said via Telegram that the Russian army “attacked several cars with civilians” near Kherson, resulting in the deaths of two men.
In the Dnipropetrovsk region, overnight strikes left six wounded, including two teenagers aged thirteen and fifteen, according to local governor Serhii Lisak via Telegram, who posted images of partially destroyed homes.
A man in his late twenties was injured in artillery shelling earlier today in Nikopol, the same official added. This city sits on the banks of the Dnieper River, separating Russian and Ukrainian forces in the region.
In northeastern Ukraine, the border area with Russia, the Sumy region was hit by 136 shelling operations in the past twenty-four hours, according to the Interior Ministry.
These strikes led to the death of a man on Tuesday and caused damage to civilian buildings.
In this region, attacks have intensified significantly in recent weeks as Moscow ramps up pressure and Russia counters armed incursions from Ukrainian territory, particularly from the Sumy area.
The Russian army asserts that it is repelling infiltration attempts by groups claiming to include Russian citizens opposed to President Vladimir Putin.
On Tuesday evening, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke of “aggression and intimidation” practiced by Moscow in the Sumy region.
On the other hand, shelling resulted in the death of a civilian and injury of two others on Wednesday in the Russian border area of Belgorod, adjacent to Ukraine and subjected to regular attacks, according to the local governor.
“The Russian army is trying to turn our border towns to ashes,” said Viacheslav Gladkov, the region’s governor, via Telegram, stating that the attack resulted in the death of a man in his car and the injury of two individuals, one of whom is a 17-year-old girl. He added that residential buildings, a school, and a kindergarten were also damaged in the city of Belgorod, the region’s center.
At the same time, the Belgorod area has been subjected to numerous aerial attacks, with responsibility being attributed to Ukraine.
