The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s office announced on Friday that 503 children have been killed and 1116 others injured since the beginning of the Russian military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
The Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform quoted the Prosecutor General’s office stating in a release, “As of August 25, more than 1619 children in Ukraine have been affected by the Russian military operation.”
The statement clarified that 503 children have been killed, and over 1116 others have sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The statement further revealed that most of the child casualties and injuries were in the Donetsk region with 485 cases, followed by Kharkiv with 299 cases, Kyiv with 129 cases, and Kherson with 122 cases.
The Prosecutor General’s office clarified that these numbers are not final as efforts are ongoing to verify data from conflict zones and territories under Russian control.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered a special military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, stating that Moscow had no plans to occupy Ukrainian territory but aimed to disarm. In response, the United States and its allies imposed strict sanctions and increased arms supplies to Ukraine.
