At least seven people died and 27 others were hospitalized on Sunday when a bus carrying football fans veered off a mountainous road after the driver reportedly lost control in Brazil.
Fire officials provided details of the accident, which occurred on a highway near Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais.
Passengers interviewed by “G1,” a local news outlet, stated that the driver had shouted that he had lost the brakes shortly before losing control of the bus.
The passengers aboard the bus were supporters of the Corinthians football club from São Paulo, returning from a match in Belo Horizonte the previous evening.
Fernando Frois, a fire department official in Minas Gerais, reported the casualty count but did not provide the condition of those who were transported to hospitals.
The National Land Transportation Agency of Brazil released a statement indicating that the bus was unregistered and lacked permission to transport passengers across different states.
Condolences have poured in from football clubs across Brazil, as well as from the Brazilian Football Confederation, expressing sympathy for the victims’ families and friends.
