A vehicle attempting to evade a police checkpoint in southern Germany veered off a highway at high speed, resulting in a crash that claimed the lives of seven people.
Preliminary reports indicate that the overcrowded vehicle was likely transporting migrants.
The accident unfolded near Muehldorf, east of Munich, along the A94 highway, a route leading to the Austrian border. The vehicle deviated from the road, ultimately overturning.
Law enforcement authorities shared on social media, specifically Twitter, that their initial findings suggest this was “a suspected smuggler vehicle carrying more than 20 occupants.” Consequently, prosecutors have initiated a homicide investigation.
All individuals aboard sustained at least minor injuries, with some in critical condition, as reported by the German news agency dpa. They were promptly transported to nearby medical facilities.
Among those crammed into the vehicle were children. Their point of origin remains unclear.
Germany has experienced a notable influx of migrants in recent months, highlighting ongoing challenges related to immigration.
