A man killed eight people and injured another with a knife in central China, according to state media reports on Friday, citing local authorities.
The attack occurred on Thursday morning in Xiaogan City, Hubei Province, as reported by the government-run CCTV channel. China’s official Xinhua news agency stated that the injured person’s life is not in danger.
Meanwhile, CCTV reported that police arrested the suspect, a 53-year-old man. He had previously undergone psychiatric treatment, according to the same source, which indicated that an investigation into the incident has been opened.
China has witnessed a wave of knife attacks in recent years, with gun violence being extremely rare in the country where citizens are prohibited from owning firearms.
On Monday, a knife-wielding woman killed two people and injured four others at an elementary school in Jiangxi Province in central China.
Similarly, a knife attack in early May resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to 21 others at a hospital in Yunnan Province in the southwest.
In August 2023, a man with a history of mental disorders killed two people and injured seven others in a knife attack in the same province.
