Since October 7, during the heightened conflict in the Middle East, the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) reported 501 fatalities among its forces.
The IDF also stated that there have been 2,110 injuries, including 898 from ground operations, with over 200 of these being severe.
Igor Tudoran, a 27-year-old reservist who joined the forces after an attack by Hamas on October 7, sustained a serious injury in the Gaza Strip when a missile hit his tank.
This injury resulted in the loss of his right leg below the hip. Despite his positive outlook, Tudoran acknowledges that his ambition to become an electrician may now be unattainable.
Edan Kleiman, the leader of the Disabled Veterans Organization, emphasized the unprecedented scale and intensity of injuries in this conflict. He advocates for the rehabilitation of over 50,000 soldiers injured in this and prior conflicts.
According to Israel’s Defense Ministry, approximately 3,000 members of the country’s security forces have been wounded since the October 7 incursion by Hamas militants into southern Israel. This incursion resulted in 1,200 deaths, mostly civilians, and 240 hostages.
The ministry notes that nearly 900 of these injuries occurred during Israel’s ground offensive initiated in late October, where troops engaged in close combat with Hamas militants, resulting in over 160 soldier fatalities.
Yagil Levy, an expert in civil-military relations at Israel’s Open University, highlighted the potential long-term impact of these injuries, indicating possible economic and social challenges for Israel in rehabilitating a large number of people with disabilities.
