An intelligence assessment released by the British Ministry of Defense regarding developments in the Ukraine war on Monday revealed that from February 24, 2022, to January 25, 2023, Russian ground forces have likely lost nearly 2600 main battle tanks and 4900 other armored combat vehicles in Ukraine.
The daily intelligence assessment, published on the “X” platform, suggested that Russian ground forces may have experienced a decrease of at least 40 percent in armored vehicle losses in 2023 compared to 2022, according to the German news agency.
The substantial reduction in Russian armored vehicle losses is likely due to the evolving localized nature of the conflict in 2023 and Russia’s defensive posture for a significant part of the year, as indicated in the assessment.
It’s worth noting that Russian ground forces have been conducting an offensive in eastern Ukraine since early October.
During this period, losses of Russian armored vehicles increased, with potential estimates of up to 365 tanks and 700 armored combat vehicles lost. However, these losses have not resulted in significant territorial gains.
The British Ministry of Defense has been providing daily updates on the war since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and has accused Moscow of engaging in a disinformation campaign regarding the conflict.
