The Romanian Defense Ministry has refuted claims of its military’s involvement in covert operations in Ukraine, specifically dismissing allegations that its F-16C fighter jets attacked Russian positions in the Kherson region as baseless and absurd.
The ministry clarified that Romania’s Air Force does not possess F-16s in the C model variant, only having A and B models.
The allegations originated from the Ukraine Front Lines social media account, which suggested that due to Ukraine’s inability to station F-16s on its soil, it might utilize bases in allied nations for such purposes.
However, Romania’s Ministry of Defense firmly denied these claims, emphasizing that its F-16C jets did not partake in any assaults on Russian forces in Ukraine.
A statement quoted by Newsweek from the ministry warned against believing such unfounded rumors circulating on social media.
Furthermore, the news piece mentioned an earlier report on the Ukraine Front Lines page, which claimed, without citing a source, that the Russian Armed Forces General Staff had reported a strike by Romanian F-16C jets in the Kherson region to the Security Council.
This report was also implied to potentially provoke retaliatory actions from Russia. However, the Romanian authorities have categorically denied such military engagements, labeling the news as completely fictitious.
The Pentagon spokesperson, Patrick Ryder, has confirmed that the US intends to send precision-guided GLSDB missiles to Ukraine.
