The recent Russia-Ukraine war began with a full-scale invasion by Russia on February 24, 2022, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two nations. The invasion, described by U.S. President Joe Biden as “unprovoked and unjustified,” was met with severe international sanctions against Russia, including measures targeting top Kremlin officials, major Russian banks, and the oil and gas industry. The UN General Assembly saw a majority of member states condemning the invasion, demanding Russia’s immediate withdrawal from Ukraine. This invasion followed a period of heightened tensions and military build-up on Ukraine’s borders, along with a history of cyberattacks against Ukraine, which had been experiencing since the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
The background to this conflict dates back to the Euromaidan Revolution in 2014, which led to Russia’s annexation of Crimea and the outbreak of fighting in Ukraine’s eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, known as the Donbas. Since then, Ukraine has faced over 14,000 conflict-related casualties and the displacement of 1.5 million people. The years leading up to the 2022 invasion saw Ukraine enhance its military capabilities and civil society networks, preparing to defend its sovereignty against a significantly more powerful Russia. Despite the disparity in military and economic power between the two nations, Ukraine has shown resilience and unity in the face of aggression.
The conflict has had profound implications, not only for Ukraine and Russia but also for global geopolitics, security, and humanitarian conditions. The war has been characterized by significant civilian casualties, widespread displacement, and extensive damage to infrastructure and heritage sites. It has also sparked a global food crisis due to Ukraine’s role as a major supplier of agricultural commodities, further compounded by Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian ports.
