A fatal shooting occurred on a subway train in New York‘s Bronx borough, leaving one dead and five injured, as reported by police on Monday evening.
The incident unfolded on a northbound No. 4 train at the Mt. Eden subway station, where an altercation between two groups of teenagers escalated to gunfire as the train doors opened, according to NYPD’s Transit Chief Michael Kemper. The initial emergency calls were received around 4:35 p.m.
The chaos continued onto the platform, where additional shots were fired, injuring members of the teen groups and innocent bystanders.
Chief Kemper emphasized that the shooting was not random but stemmed from a dispute between the two groups on the train.
Among the victims were four males, including a 34-year-old who succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The other injured males were aged 15, 28, and 71, though details of their injuries were not disclosed. A 14-year-old girl and a 29-year-old woman also sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting.
Chief Kemper reassured the public that the subway remains safe, highlighting the rarity of such incidents and the decrease in shootings last year. He stressed the need for legal consequences to deter such bold acts of violence.
The suspect, last seen wearing a red jacket and ski mask, fled the scene. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities planning to release surveillance images and conduct witness interviews to determine the number of suspects involved.
Janno Lieber, chair and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, affirmed that this kind of violence is unacceptable.
“New York’s heart breaks,” Lieber said. “New York’s heart breaks when people are headed home, and kids who are coming home for school to do their homework, are subjected to random acts of violence, like what occurred here late this afternoon.”
