Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze emphasized the necessity of initiating European Union accession talks with the country by the end of the year, asserting that there is no alternative to this path.
In an interview with Imedi TV, Kobakhidze underscored his hope for a decision from the European Union that serves the interests of both Georgia and the bloc equally. He highlighted the importance of fairness in the decision-making process, expressing concerns over perceived pressure on the EU in 2022, when Georgia was not granted membership candidate status by the European Council.
Kobakhidze pointed to what he termed “serious pressure” exerted on the EU, suggesting that the opposition United National Movement party and its supporters were involved in attempts to disrupt the situation in Georgia.
The Prime Minister emphasized the need for fairness in EU-Georgia relations, particularly in light of the bloc’s decisions to open accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova while leaving Georgia behind. He argued that despite facing challenges such as corruption and institutional weaknesses, Georgia outpaced these countries in terms of development.
Kobakhidze dismissed claims that EU membership candidate status would lead to substantial assistance, labeling such assertions as lies. He highlighted Georgia’s progress in economic, democratic, and human rights spheres, positioning the country as the “fastest” developing nation among EU membership candidates.
Amidst these assertions, Kobakhidze reiterated his hope for a fair decision from the EU, emphasizing the efforts of the Georgian government to advance democracy, human rights, and the economy.
