Three Syrian soldiers, including a senior officer, were killed today (Tuesday) in an attack carried out by fighters from the “Islamic State” organization on a military site in central Syria, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The Observatory stated: “Elements from ISIS cells launched an attack on a site where regime forces are stationed in the al-Sukhnah desert in the eastern countryside of Homs.”
According to the Observatory, the attack resulted in “the killing of a senior officer and two other soldiers,” while regime forces deployed military reinforcements.
On May 3, at least 15 pro-regime militants were killed in attacks by the organization on military sites in central Syria, according to the Observatory.
Since seizing large areas in Iraq and Syria in 2014, the extremist organization has suffered consecutive defeats. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), led by Kurdish fighters and backed by the US, announced in March 2019 the defeat of ISIS in its last strongholds following months-long battles.
However, its elements, who retreated to desert areas, continue to carry out attacks primarily targeting the Syrian army and the SDF.
Since its outbreak in 2011, the Syrian conflict has resulted in the deaths of more than half a million people, caused massive destruction to infrastructure, and displaced millions of residents inside and outside the country.
