Amid the ongoing fierce conflict that has persisted for over 14 months, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), has condemned the attacks on healthcare facilities in Sudan, calling them “unacceptable.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Dr. Ghebreyesus highlighted that the conflict in Sudan continues to claim numerous lives. He expressed deep sorrow and shock over the recent death of a nurse during an attack on a healthcare facility in Wad al-Nawara, Al Jazirah state.
Dr. Ghebreyesus pointed out that an assault targeted the Southern Hospital, operated by Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, resulting in its closure. He stressed that such actions deprive people of essential medical care.
He reiterated the urgent need to protect healthcare facilities and ensure their safe provision to all in need at all times, particularly as renewed battles erupt in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state.
Eyewitnesses reported clashes between the army and allied armed movements against the Rapid Support Forces in the northern parts of the city, according to the Arab World News Agency.
