The European Union has issued a stern response to recent threats made by Hezbollah against Cyprus, affirming that any aggression directed towards Cyprus jeopardizes the security of all 27 EU member states.
Peter Stano, a spokesperson for the EU Commission, emphasized the bloc’s unwavering support for Cyprus amid escalating tensions sparked by Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Nasrallah had warned that Cyprus could become embroiled in broader conflicts if it allows Israel to use its ports and airports for operations against Lebanon.
Stano reassured that the EU is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to defuse the situation, maintaining communication with key regional stakeholders including Lebanon and Hezbollah.
Cyprus, bolstered by strengthened ties with Israel following joint military exercises and collaborations driven by shared interests in offshore gas reserves, has refuted any involvement in military actions against Lebanon. Konstantinos Letymbiotis, spokesperson for the Cypriot government, reiterated that Cyprus plays a constructive role in regional diplomacy, emphasizing its commitment to peace and stability.
The remarks underscore Cyprus’s strategic importance in Eastern Mediterranean affairs and the EU’s stance on safeguarding member states against external threats, particularly amidst volatile geopolitical dynamics.
