The U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) has authorized the Ukrainian military to use longer-range missiles supplied by the United States to strike targets deep within Russia, beyond the front lines near Kharkiv, if it is for self-defense.
Major General Pat Ryder, the Pentagon Press Secretary, explained, “Russia is firing at Ukrainian targets from within its borders, treating its territory as a safe zone.”
“Self-Defense” He added to reporters on Thursday, “As we observe Russian forces conducting such cross-border operations, we have made it clear that Ukraine can and has the right to respond by firing in self-defense.”
The White House announced it would expedite the delivery of air defense interceptor missiles to Ukraine by redirecting shipments initially destined for other allied countries, as Washington seeks to counter the increasing Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Easing Restrictions President Joe Biden initially eased the restrictions on how Ukraine could use U.S.-provided munitions, giving them an additional option to better defend the city of Kharkiv from the continuous barrage of Russian missiles.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in 2022, the United States has maintained a policy of not allowing Ukraine to use the weapons provided by the U.S. to strike targets within Russia, fearing an escalation of the war.
Patriot Missiles The United States has regularly sent interceptor missiles for Ukraine’s air defense systems, including Patriot missile batteries and advanced surface-to-air missile systems.
U.S. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters that there is an urgent need for more, as the Russian military has accelerated its missile and drone attacks on cities and infrastructure.
The upcoming shipments are expected to include hundreds of Patriot missiles.
