Egypt and South Sudan announced the launch of joint projects in the water and irrigation sector in Juba on Friday, with plans for further collaborations in this field.
A statement from Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation indicated that Minister Hani Sewilam, along with his South Sudanese counterpart, Pal Mai Deng, inaugurated a project for constructing a water level and flow measurement station in Bor, Jonglei State, Eastern South Sudan.
The Egyptian ministry spokesperson highlighted that enhancing the measurement system and the rain prediction center will enable South Sudan to estimate rainfall amounts and locations. The station will provide real-time data for use in water management models.
Additionally, the ministers inaugurated a groundwater well project at John Garang University in Bor, establishing a drinking water station to serve 4,000 people in South Sudan.
The ministers also launched a project for clearing aquatic weeds from the Bahr al-Ghazal River in Bentiu to improve river navigation and reduce flood risks.
