The Social Democratic Party (SDP), the party of the German Chancellor, has urged the reopening of Germany’s embassy in Kabul.
Nils Schmid, the party’s spokesperson, emphasized in an interview with Der Tagesspiegel the need to send German diplomats back to Afghanistan and stressed the importance of reopening the embassy in Kabul.
Schmid argued that sanctions against the Taliban‘s interim government are counterproductive for all involved parties.
He stated, “Germany should reopen its embassy in Kabul. By refusing to establish diplomatic relations with the Taliban and withholding developmental aid, Germany is exacerbating Afghanistan’s problems.”
Political analyst Jawed Momand told TOLOnews that reopening the embassy could foster dialogue and reduce distances.
He said, “This can bridge the gap with the international community. Countries play a vital role in reconstruction,” echoed another analyst, Edris Khan Zazai.
Hamdullah Fetrat, deputy spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, welcomed the SDP’s statements, expressing the interim government’s readiness to support the arrival of German diplomats in Kabul.
“We view the statements of the spokesperson of the German Social Democratic Party positively.
If Germany sends its diplomats to Kabul, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is ready to facilitate their return,” said Fetrat.
This development follows Nicaragua’s appointment of a non-resident ambassador to Afghanistan, and several other countries are also considering reopening their embassies in Kabul.
