The Saudi Intellectual Property Authority (SIPA) is getting ready to engage in 15 international treaties and agreements aimed at bolstering the intellectual property sector in Saudi Arabia. This diplomatic endeavor seeks to enhance the protection and enforcement system of intellectual property rights and foster cooperation with international partners to drive a positive and progressive impact in safeguarding human thought and creativity.
Hisham Al-Arifi, the Executive Director for Partnerships and International Cooperation at the SIPA, stated that the authority aims to join these international treaties by the end of this year. This announcement follows numerous meetings SIPA has been holding with global counterparts during their participation in the 64th General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, which began on Thursday.
Al-Arifi clarified that this global forum, in which Saudi Arabia participates and is co-sponsored by WIPO along with 193 other countries, will have a direct and positive impact toward dazzling progress in the intellectual property sector led by the Saudi Authority. He confirmed that Saudi Arabia’s annual and recurring participation sends a message to the organization and its member states about the latest updates concerning the sector within the kingdom.
The Saudi official mentioned that the Kingdom joined the WIPO in 1982. He pointed out that the relationship between the two sides has seen a strategic development in many of its various projects and works since then. Saudi Arabia has joined 13 different agreements and is looking forward to joining nearly 15 international treaties and agreements. This participation in international forums and bilateral meetings aims to enhance cooperation and partnerships to achieve positive results that serve the objectives of various parties.
Next Tuesday, the “Saudi Day” event is scheduled to spotlight Saudi culture on the platform of the international forum, which gathers delegations from 193 countries worldwide. “Saudi Day” will introduce aspects of Saudi culture and civilization that reflect the historical spirit and contemporary character of the kingdom.
Saudi Arabia has called for the adoption of Arabic among the languages of the Madrid System, designed for registering and managing trademarks through a single centralized system, and the Hague System internationally adopted for registering industrial designs and filing and managing their registration from the filing to the renewal stage.
Dr. Abdulaziz Bin Mohammed Al-Swailem, the CEO of the Saudi Intellectual Property Authority, stressed the importance of adopting Arabic within the Madrid and Hague systems’ languages. He indicated that Saudi Arabia has shown great interest in protecting and enforcing intellectual property rights and enhancing the enforcement system.
During his speech at the WIPO General Assembly of the 64 Member States, Dr. Al-Swailem revealed the developments in intellectual property in Saudi Arabia. The country has adopted a national strategy to build a system that boosts the economy based on innovation and creativity and continues to update all intellectual property legislations.
