On Tuesday, Israeli media reported that security forces in Azerbaijan thwarted an attempted attack on the Israeli Embassy located in the capital city of Baku.
According to the official Israeli Radio, Azerbaijani authorities apprehended a foreign national from Afghanistan on suspicions of planning an attack on a foreign embassy.
The State Security Service in Azerbaijan revealed in their counter-terrorism investigations that they had arrested an Afghan national who was reportedly involved in a conspiracy with others to perpetrate what was described as a “terrorist act” in the Republic of Azerbaijan, as per Azerbaijani news agencies.
The Security Service further elaborated in their statement that the accused individual had entered Azerbaijan with the purpose of carrying out his premeditated “criminal deeds”, which were planned abroad. He had been monitoring and surveying the vicinity of a third country’s embassy – not explicitly naming the Israeli Embassy – during his stay in Baku.
Furthermore, the statement indicated that the detained person, now subject to an ongoing investigation, had established agreements with others to involve them in the operation, gather firearms and explosive substances for the plan, and arrange for the necessary financial backing.
