Dr. Amjad Al-Wakeel, Chairman of the Nuclear Power Plants Authority, revealed that the concrete bases for the nuclear island of the first reactor with a capacity of 1,400 megawatts have been completed. He announced that the reactor core catcher is expected to be installed on October 6th.
In exclusive remarks to “Al-Youm Al-Sabea”, Al-Wakeel added that the visit of representatives from the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority and its consultant (VO-Safety) to verify the readiness of the authority to begin construction works for the fourth nuclear unit is one of the regulatory procedures required to issue the construction permit for the fourth nuclear unit. During the visit, they reviewed the approved design documents necessary to start work and ensured their compliance with all regulatory requirements.
Al-Wakeel stated that the success of the inspection visit is a culmination of the efforts made by the working groups of the Nuclear Power Plants Authority, leveraging the expertise and lessons learned from previous inspection visits for the first, second, and third units. It is also a result of the ongoing collaboration and effective communication between the Nuclear Power Plants Authority and the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority.
It is worth noting that the first concrete pour for the fourth nuclear unit is scheduled to take place in November, following the acquisition of a construction permit by the Nuclear Power Plants Authority from the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority.
