In a significant move at the African Union Summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, leaders from across the continent have unanimously condemned the ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza, calling for its immediate cessation.
Musa Faki, the head of the African Union Commission, labeled the attacks as the “most egregious” breach of international humanitarian law, accusing Israel of perpetrating an “extermination” of Gaza’s inhabitants.
During the summit, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh also addressed the assembly, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
Faki assured the Palestinian delegation of the African Union’s unwavering solidarity, expressing deep concern over the unprecedented nature of the attacks.
Ghazali Othmani, the outgoing AU President from the Comoros, praised the legal action taken by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
He vehemently criticized what he referred to as the “genocide committed by Israel in Palestine,” highlighting the broader implications of the conflict on global stability.
The African Union’s collective voice adds a significant dimension to the international response to the crisis, underlining the urgent need for a resolution to prevent further humanitarian disasters.
