Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa Hosts Meeting Between “Taqaddum” and African Union High-Level Mechanism
A delegation from the Coordinating Body of Democratic Civil Forces “Taqaddum” met with the African Union’s high-level mechanism, chaired by Ambassador Mohamed Chambas and Ms. Simbusa Wandira, in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa.
The delegation included the Vice President of “Taqaddum,” Hadi Idris, Vice President Hiam Bushra, the General Secretary of the Coordination Body, Al-Sadiq Al-Sadiq, and leadership members Asmaa Mahmoud Mohamed Taha and Bakri Al-Jak.
According to a press statement from “Taqaddum” on Monday, the African Union’s high-level mechanism congratulated “Taqaddum” on the success of its founding conference.
The high-level mechanism informed the delegation about its efforts to halt the war in Sudan through a comprehensive political solution negotiated by the Sudanese themselves.
They emphasized that the African Union is working to unify peace-seeking efforts into a single platform, noting that the Jeddah platform is currently the only effective one for achieving a ceasefire.
The high-level mechanism also confirmed that the African Union is on the verge of facilitating an inclusive dialogue among Sudanese parties in the coming weeks.
The situation in Sudan, remains dire amid the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Since the conflict began in April 2023, it has resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions of people. The violence has particularly escalated in West Darfur, where ethnic Massalit communities have been targeted in what has been described as ethnic cleansing and potentially genocide.
Human Rights Watch has documented severe human rights abuses, including mass killings, torture, and other atrocities against civilians. The RSF and allied militias have systematically attacked Massalit neighborhoods, leading to large-scale massacres, especially during attempts by civilians to flee the violence.
The international community, including the United Nations and humanitarian organizations, is calling for immediate action to protect civilians and provide humanitarian aid. There are also calls for sanctions and an arms embargo against those responsible for the atrocities in Darfur.
