Algiers: In a significant step towards bolstering bilateral cooperation in nuclear technology, Algerian Energy and Mines Minister Mohamed Arkab met with Yu Jianfeng, the CEO of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), and his accompanying delegation on Thursday.
The discussions, as reported by the Algerian Energy Ministry, centered on the existing cooperation between the Algerian Atomic Energy Commission (COMENA) and the Chinese corporation CNNC. The focus was particularly on the development of nuclear energy and its active and non-active applications for peaceful purposes.
Both parties delved into topics related to the expansion of their cooperation, especially in the field of nuclear technology in medicine, diagnostic imaging procedures, and the production of radioactive isotopes in Algeria. These technologies are pivotal in various sectors, including industry, agriculture, and medicine, notably in diagnosing and treating diseases such as cancer.
The Algerian and Chinese sides agreed to establish a working group comprising experts from COMENA and CNNC. This team will be tasked with developing a clear action plan for cooperation, tailored to Algeria’s current use of nuclear sciences, technologies, and applications in the medical field, particularly in cancer treatment. The plan will also identify Algeria’s national needs in this domain.
This collaboration marks a significant milestone in Algeria’s investment in nuclear technology and applications, particularly for medical use, highlighting the country’s commitment to advancing healthcare and cancer treatment capabilities.
