During his visit to Algeria, French President’s Special Envoy for Libya, Paul Soler, discussed political solutions to the crises threatening stability in the region.
Ahmed Attaf, the Algerian Foreign Minister, welcomed Soler, who was appointed by President Emmanuel Macron to handle the Libyan file, on Sunday evening. According to a statement from the Algerian Foreign Ministry, the meeting was “an opportunity to exchange views on the developments in the region and the prospects for political solutions to the crises that threaten peace and stability, away from external rivalries and interventions.”
French readiness to host a mini-security summit on Libya
This comes days after French intelligence website “Africa Intelligence” revealed Paris’s readiness to host a mini-security summit focusing on Libya, chaired by Soler and attended by Britain, the United States, and Italy. The agenda will primarily focus on establishing joint military units.
The meeting will also revolve around “securing the borders currently controlled by tribal factions in the west and south,” as well as the forces of the “General Command” in the east, according to the French website.
On the other hand, there has been much talk about the imminent formation of the so-called “Libyan-European Corps” in the west of the country through a Western company, raising speculation about the relationship of this step to the confrontation with the Russian-African Corps in eastern Libya.
