Apple is enhancing its Siri voice assistant and operating systems by integrating OpenAI‘s ChatGPT to stay competitive in the AI field.
The tech giant announced this upgrade, among other features, at its annual developers conference on Monday.
This initiative is part of a new personalized AI system called “Apple Intelligence,” designed to simplify navigation on Apple devices.
The updates to iPhone and Mac operating systems will allow access to ChatGPT through a collaboration with OpenAI. ChatGPT will also enhance other tools, such as text and content generation, with a test version available in the fall.
Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that this move would elevate the company’s products as he opened the Worldwide Developers Conference in Cupertino, California.
However, the market responded coolly, with Apple’s share price dropping by 1.91% on the day of the announcement.
Elon Musk, owner of Tesla and Twitter/X, criticized the partnership, threatening to ban iPhones from his companies due to data security concerns.
“Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI,” Musk said on X. “They’re selling you down the river.”
Samsung also mocked Apple’s announcement on X, posting, “Adding ‘Apple’ doesn’t make it new or groundbreaking. Welcome to AI.”
The bigger issue for Apple is whether its new AI tools will help it catch up with rivals who have embraced the technology more quickly.
Apple, which was overtaken by Microsoft as the world’s most valuable company in January, was again surpassed by chip-maker Nvidia in early June.
Last March, the European Union (EU) investigated tech giants Apple, Google, and Meta for potential violations of new digital competition rules.
The commission has warned that Apple, Google, and Meta may not be adhering to the new digital competition rules, opening investigations that could result in significant fines.
