The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has invited the foreign ministers of Israel and Palestine to participate in an emergency meeting of the European Union (EU) Council in Oman on October 10.
Borrell announced this in a tweet on his official Twitter account, saying, “I have invited the Israeli Foreign Minister, Yair Lapid, to join the meeting of EU foreign ministers that I will chair this afternoon. I have also invited Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki to speak at the meeting and present the views of the Palestinian Authority.”
The High Representative is participating in the 27th Joint Cooperation Council between the EU and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, held from October 8 to 11. Borrell is presiding over the Joint Council alongside the current Omani presidency of the GCC, represented by Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi, Oman’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Borrell’s call signifies the EU’s commitment to engaging with key stakeholders in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This move comes at a critical juncture when tensions and violence in the region have escalated.
The EU has been actively involved in seeking a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and has consistently supported a two-state solution based on negotiations between the parties involved.
The outcome of this emergency meeting will be closely watched by the international community, as it may have significant implications for the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict and regional stability.
