China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed Beijing’s support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state as a means to address the conflict in Israel and Gaza.
He emphasized China’s commitment to peace and justice while standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
In a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Wang offered China’s mediation for peace, stating that Beijing “stands for peace and justice” and is committed to supporting the just cause of the Palestinian people in protecting their national rights.
Wang further conveyed to the Iranian Foreign Minister, Hussein Amir Abdollahian, as per a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, that “the fundamental reason for the current situation in Palestine and Israel is that the Palestinian people’s right to establish their state has been suspended for a long time.”
He stressed the need to end this historical injustice as soon as possible.
In a separate call with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Çavuşoğlu, Wang urged for a ceasefire, the opening of humanitarian aid routes to Gaza, and the resumption of dialogue between Israel and Palestinian authorities.
Notably, the Chinese Foreign Minister stated, without mentioning Israel by name, that “the right to self-defense should be exercised in line with international humanitarian law, without causing casualties among innocent civilians,” according to a statement released by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
China has long supported the “two-state solution” for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
However, both Israel and the United States have expressed strong dissatisfaction with China for not strongly condemning the deadly and brutal attacks by Hamas against Israelis on October 7 and for not expressing support for Israel following the massacre.
