Zhu Fenglian, a representative of the Office of the State Council for Taiwan Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, emphasized the necessity for the United States to cease arming Taiwan.
Speaking at a press conference regarding the approval by the United States Senate of the Taiwan Assurance Act, Zhu urged the US to take concrete actions to fulfill its commitment to not support Taiwan’s independence and to cease arming the island in any form.
She pointed out that the legislation seriously violates the principle of “One China” and the three joint communiqués between China and the United States, sending a signal to separatist forces advocating for Taiwan’s independence.
Fenglian stressed that the Taiwan issue is an internal matter for China and Beijing does not tolerate any external interference.
According to her, the majority of Taiwanese people desire peace, development, and cooperation, rather than war, stagnation, division, and confrontation.
She noted that the ruling party in Taiwan ignores public opinion and is ready to become a pawn of external forces to contain China, emphasizing that any attempts by separatists to achieve independence by force or reliance on external forces are doomed to fail.
Earlier, the US Senate approved a package of bills related to aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, in addition to seizing Russian assets.
After final approval by the Senate, the package will go to President Joe Biden for signing, who has promised to sign it.
