A Chinese envoy on Wednesday has called for the lifting of sanctions on Syria, the facilitation of a political resolution to the Syrian crisis, and the termination of illegitimate foreign military presence in the country.
The Chinese state news agency “Xinhua” quoted China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, during a General Assembly discussion regarding Russia’s veto on the humanitarian aid dossier, saying that Western sanctions imposed on Syria should be ended immediately and unconditionally.
The Chinese envoy regarded that achieving a political settlement for the Syrian crisis is the ultimate solution to the humanitarian issue. He also welcomed Damascus’ approval for the United Nations to deliver humanitarian aid to northwestern Syria through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing.
On Wednesday, members of the United Nations General Assembly convened to discuss the humanitarian crossing file across Turkish territory. This follows Russia’s thwarting of a Western resolution to extend the UN operation.
Damascus permitted the United Nations to introduce aid via the Bab al-Hawa border crossing for a period of six months, following the Security Council’s failure to extend the mandate for aid delivery.
Russia exercised its “veto” right against the resolution proposed by Switzerland and Brazil in the UN Security Council, regarding the extension of aid delivery to Syria through Turkey for nine months. Meanwhile, it presented its own resolution to the UN Security Council, proposing the extension of this border crossing’s operation for a period of six months.
