Tragedy struck outside the New York courthouse where the hush-money trial involving Donald Trump is underway, as a man succumbed to his injuries after setting himself on fire.
According to the New York City Police Department, the man, identified as Max Azzarello of St. Augustine, Florida, tragically passed away at an area hospital. Initially in critical condition, the man, in his late 30s, was unable to survive his injuries.
Authorities emphasized that there is no indication that the man intended to target Trump or any other individuals associated with the trial. Deputy Commissioner Tarik Sheppard described the individual as a “conspiracy theorist” based on preliminary assessments.
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing scene, detailing how the man pulled pamphlets from a backpack and scattered them before dousing himself with a flammable liquid and igniting it. Although some of the pamphlets referenced “evil billionaires,” there were no direct mentions of Trump visible to witnesses.
The incident left a lingering smell of smoke in the plaza, prompting a swift response from law enforcement, including the deployment of a fire extinguisher to contain the flames.
Despite drawing significant crowds on its first day, the trial has seen a decrease in protesters and spectators since then. Security measures in the area are under review, with considerations of potential closures to ensure safety, particularly around the sidestreet used by Trump for ingress and egress from the courthouse.
Kaz Daughtry, Deputy Commissioner of the New York City Police Department, highlighted the need for a reevaluation of security protocols in light of the incident, suggesting the possibility of shutting down certain areas to mitigate risks.
The tragic event outside the courthouse has cast a somber shadow over the ongoing trial proceedings, prompting reflections on safety measures and the potential impact of heightened tensions surrounding the case.
