The Egyptian Red Crescent has revealed the establishment of large camps at the request of the Egyptian political leadership in southwest Khan Younis, Gaza Strip.
The camp accommodates more than 6,000 people and provides all relief and medical services alongside daily essentials such as food and water for the residents of the camp. Israeli media outlets have reported about large camps recently established by Egypt within the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip, for the sheltering of refugees in the southern part of the sector.
The Israeli news site zman reported that Egypt has established a large camp in Palestinian Rafah, to keep the problem within the borders of Gaza, and prevent it from flowing southward towards the Sinai Peninsula.
The Hebrew site pointed out that the numbers reflect the complexity of the situation in Palestinian Rafah. The population of the city was about 200,000 in normal days, but now it is approaching one million after many residents of Khan Younis fled there, joining residents from northern Gaza Strip who arrived at the border town with Egypt at the beginning of the conflicts in the sector.
The Israeli news site emphasized that Tel Aviv is well aware that any attack in this area could lead to a mass exodus of refugees towards Egypt and a breach of the border line, which could deteriorate relations between Cairo and Tel Aviv.
The site noted that Egypt has already prepared for this scenario and built earthen dams and trenches along the fence a month and a half ago.
Egyptian media outlets reported that the Egyptian Red Crescent, under the direction of the political leadership, has established a relief camp in the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.
The first phase of the camp’s establishment is about to be completed and includes the erection of 300 tents accommodating more than 1,500 people.
The relief camp in Khan Younis comes as part of Egypt’s efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and accommodate thousands of displaced people from its north.
