The Egyptian Meteorological Authority has secured a place in the executive council of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Egypt’s tenure in this position will extend until 2027.
Egypt’s Civil Aviation Minister, Mohamed Abbas Helmy, celebrated this achievement, recognizing it as a further testament to the progress made by Egypt under President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, particularly in support of the civil aviation industry.
Helmy attributed this accomplishment to the persistent efforts and proactive engagement of the Egyptian Meteorological Authority with the WMO. He highlighted their significant cooperation, especially during COP27, and their ability to garner support from other member states at meetings conducted during the recent Arab Summit in May, reinforcing Egypt’s leadership and esteemed standing in the region.
The WMO executive council is responsible for implementing Congress’s decisions, coordinating programs, managing finances, processing resolutions and recommendations from regional associations and technical commissions, and formulating suggestions on issues pertaining to international meteorology and associated activities.
The Council usually convenes at least once annually, the timing and location of which are decided by the President of the Organization in consultation with other Council members. Decisions within the Council require a two-thirds majority vote for approval.
The structure of the Executive Council includes a president, three vice presidents, six regional association presidents, and 27 directors of National Meteorological or Hydrometeorological Services, all elected by Congress. Each member is granted a single vote.
