European Union officials have unveiled an ambitious proposal aimed at significantly increasing the production and ownership of weapons within the bloc, in an effort to reduce its dependence on American weaponry amidst the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.
European Commission Vice President Margrethe Vestager emphasized the need for a more balanced transatlantic relationship, stating, “We need to strike the right balance across the Atlantic, irrespective of the electoral dynamics in the United States.”
She added, “We must take more responsibility for our security, while of course, remaining fully committed to our alliance in NATO.”
Vestager also mentioned that “improving our mobility capacity will make us a stronger ally.”
This move reflects the EU’s growing commitment to bolstering its defense capabilities independently, highlighting a strategic shift towards self-reliance in military matters.
