During a session of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced that the European Union has approved a €5 billion increase in funding for the European Peace Facility to provide military aid to Ukraine.
However, Hungary has chosen not to participate in allocating funds for this purpose.
Szijjarto described the atmosphere of the meeting as tense, highlighting that the council members reached a final decision to augment the European Peace Facility, enabling EU member states to finance weapons supplies to Ukraine.
Despite the decision, Hungary abstained and will not have any political or financial obligations towards the support fund.
“While Hungary will need to contribute €50 million, we retain the autonomy to determine how this funding will be utilized,” Szijjarto clarified.
He emphasized that Hungary intends to allocate its contribution towards enhancing stability and security in the Western Balkans, aligning with its strategic priorities.
