The recent Israeli aggression on the city and refugee camp of Jenin has been described as “painful” and a violation of international law by the European Union’s representative in Palestine, Sven Kuehn von Burgsdorff.
During his visit to Jenin, along with 30 diplomats on Saturday, organized by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), the destruction caused by the Israeli forces was observed. Dozens of houses were demolished within a 9-kilometer radius, along with the destruction of water and sewage pipes.
Burgsdorff called for pressure to be exerted on Israel to resolve the conflict, as without it, stopping the violence would be impossible, according to Palestinian media sources.
He demanded that the occupying state refrain directly and clearly from any actions that harm civilians and have consequences for them, and to respect international law during any military operation.
Burgsdorff also called for a transparent investigation in case of any misconduct by settlers, and for holding those who commit attacks accountable.
He clarified that the purpose of the visit was to show solidarity with the civilian population in the camp, who must be protected under all circumstances, especially children and families. The goal was to assess the damage incurred and compile reports to be shared with diplomatic missions worldwide concerning the events in Jenin.
Last Monday, the Israeli occupation forces launched a wide-scale aggression on the city of Jenin and its camp, which lasted for two days. The attack resulted in the martyrdom of 12 Palestinians, including five children, and left more than 140 injured, including 30 in critical condition. Additionally, the infrastructure of the camp was destroyed, causing significant damage to the homes and properties of its residents.
