Josep Borrell, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, arrived in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on Tuesday morning for an official visit to support Ukraine in its current military crisis with Russia.
According to the Ukrainian official news agency (Ukrinform), Borrell, accompanied by his special diplomatic advisor Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, is expected to reaffirm the international community’s long-term military support for Ukraine during his visit.
Before traveling to Ukraine, Borrell stopped in Poland, where he discussed forms of support for Kyiv in a joint meeting with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. This support includes military and financial aid, reconstruction assistance, as well as measures against Russia and the use of its frozen assets.
Borrell emphasized before heading to Kyiv that the European Union must continue to support Ukraine in every possible way, including by increasing ammunition supplies.
In previous remarks, Borrell highlighted the importance of maintaining and demonstrating unwavering support for Ukraine, underscoring the necessity to assess the current situation and set clear expectations for the upcoming months and the end of the year.
Earlier this month, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine called on European Union leaders to unite in establishing a fund to support Ukraine within the European Peace Fund, with at least 5 billion euros annually for a period of 4 years.
Since the beginning of the war against Russia, the EU has strongly supported Ukraine. In 2022, significant actions included the European Parliament approving an €18 billion loan for Ukraine and setting a price cap on Russian oil to target high-value sectors of the Russian economy. The EU also declared Russia a state sponsor of terrorism due to the atrocities carried out against Ukrainian civilians. These measures demonstrate the EU’s commitment to supporting Ukraine through political, military, humanitarian, and financial assistance.
