Finland declared its intention to maintain defense spending at a minimum of 2% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for several years and called on European Union (EU) nations to follow suit and increase their military expenditure.
Finland’s Foreign Minister, Elna Valtonen, in a meeting with heads of diplomatic missions in Helsinki on Monday, stated, “Finland aims to set a precedent and encourages European nations to invest more in their defense budgets.”
She further emphasized that Europe should shoulder a greater responsibility for its security, in collaboration with its American allies.
Moreover, she confirmed that the government of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo is committed to sustaining Finnish defense spending at a minimum of 2% of GDP, aligning with NATO’s objective during the current government’s term.
