A merchant vessel encountered a significant incident today in the waters off Yemen. According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the ship was struck by two projectiles, leading to a fire onboard. The exact nature and origin of these projectiles remain unidentified.
In a separate incident, British maritime security firm Ambrey reported another vessel issuing a distress call after allegedly being hit by a missile approximately 129 nautical miles east of Yemen’s Aden. Ambrey suggested that the vessel’s profile might align with targets of the Houthi group, an Iran-allied faction involved in recent maritime attacks in the region.
The US Navy’s 5th Fleet has not yet confirmed these reports.
Houthi-run television has reported airstrikes by a coalition involving US and British warplanes on Hodeidah, Yemen.
The Houthis, who control Yemen’s capital and much of its territory, have been linked to attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea since November. These actions have been purportedly in support of Palestinians amidst ongoing conflict in the region. Recent incidents include sinking one ship, seizing another, and causing fatalities among crew members.
Additionally, Yemeni militants claimed responsibility for recent attacks involving small watercraft and missiles near the port of Hodeidah, resulting in a Greek-owned cargo ship taking on water and requiring rescue.
The situation remains fluid, with ongoing concerns over maritime security in the Red Sea region.
