French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu has declared France’s commitment to provide Ukraine with a new package of military aid.
This comprehensive support includes hundreds of armored vehicles, anti-aircraft missiles, and remote-controlled munitions.
The move, detailed in a late Saturday interview with “La Tribune,” signifies France’s continued support for Ukraine amidst ongoing conflicts.
Lecornu highlighted the critical needs of the Ukrainian army, emphasizing the importance of France’s VAB vehicles for troop mobility across the extensive frontlines.
Despite some of these vehicles being over 40 years old and gradually being replaced by the newer “Griffon” armored vehicles, Lecornu assured that the VABs remain fully operational.
“We’re talking about hundreds of them for the year 2024 and early 2025,” Lecornu stated, underlining France’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s military requirements.
Furthermore, France plans to bolster Kiev’s forces with additional “Aster 30” anti-aircraft missiles, compatible with the SAMP/T launchers, akin to the Patriot air defense system provided by the United States.
These measures are part of a broader strategy to enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities against aerial threats.
Lecornu also unveiled France’s expedited efforts to develop remote-controlled munitions, with deliveries to Ukraine expected to commence this summer.
This development comes as part of France’s push to increase weapons production to meet the demands of its own military while ensuring sustained support for Ukraine amidst the prolonged conflict with Russia.
As Ukraine warns of dwindling ammunition stocks, it has specifically urged Washington to resolve the political deadlock freezing a new $60 billion aid package.
This plea underscores the urgent need for continued international support as Ukraine defends itself against Russian aggression.
On the ground, the Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched 16 missiles and 11 drones in an overnight air attack on Sunday.
According to a statement on the Telegram app, nine drones and nine missiles were successfully intercepted and destroyed, demonstrating the ongoing intensity of the conflict and the critical role of advanced air defense systems.
France’s latest commitment to Ukraine underscores the international community’s resolve to support Kiev in its defense efforts.
As the war with Russia enters its third year, the provision of armored vehicles, advanced missiles, and innovative munitions from France represents a crucial bolster to Ukraine’s military capabilities and its resolve to defend its sovereignty.
