German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has urged European partners to enhance their military support for Ukraine, according to the German news agency.
The politician, a member of the Social Democratic Party, addressed parliament on Wednesday, stating, “Germany alone cannot be relied upon.”
Scholz’s remarks come ahead of an emergency summit of European Union leaders. He emphasized that Germany is the largest supporter of Ukraine after the United States, providing half of European aid to the former Soviet republic.
He added, “If we, who should provide the majority of this, do so, it will not be enough for Ukraine. We want more countries to actively participate in support.”
The Chancellor warned against reaching a point where Germany becomes burdened beyond its capacity and stressed that everything must be done globally to avoid this situation, saying, “It would be presumptuous to think that we can do it alone.”
Scholz stated, “That is not the case; we need unity and solidarity.”
