The International Court of Justice commenced public hearings today, Monday, regarding Nicaragua’s request for provisional measures against Germany since March 1st, accusing it of “facilitating genocide” against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip through its military and political support to Israel.
Nicaragua presented the 43-page lawsuit today, Monday, while Germany will respond to the court on the following day, facing the highest judicial body in the United Nations.
Nicaragua has urged the International Court of Justice to impose provisional measures, compelling Berlin to halt arms exports to Israel and reverse its decision to cease funding the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
It emphasized that these measures are necessary and urgent to protect the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza.
Provisional measures are emergency orders imposed by the court pending a broader consideration of the case.
Representative Carlos José Argüello Gómez of Nicaragua told the court that Germany violated the 1948 Genocide Convention by continuing to supply Israel with weapons after judges of the International Court of Justice found it likely that Israel had violated some rights guaranteed by the Genocide Convention during its attack on Gaza.
Argüello Gómez added that there is no doubt that Germany was well aware of the significant danger represented by committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
