The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the German government jointly announced a crucial contribution of 10 million euros to ensure the continuity of food assistance for the most vulnerable refugees in Jordan.
According to the WFP, this timely contribution from Germany will prevent the discontinuation of food assistance for approximately 410,000 refugees from Syria and other countries residing throughout the Kingdom in the upcoming month of October. With this contribution, Germany’s donations to the WFP in Jordan to bolster the humanitarian response has reached 50 million euros (equivalent to 54 million USD) in 2023 alone.
Florian Rindl, the Acting Head of the German Embassy in Amman, stated, “As the second-largest bilateral donor in response to the Syrian crisis, Germany remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting refugees and host countries. We’re pleased that our contribution will prevent the disruption of much-needed food assistance for the most vulnerable refugee families in Jordan.” He added, “We deeply appreciate the efforts made by the Jordanian government and our humanitarian partners, such as the WFP, in addressing the needs of the refugees in Jordan.”
Alberto Correa Mendez, the Country Director and Resident Representative of the WFP in Jordan, expressed gratitude for the pivotal contribution from Germany, especially at a time when the program was facing potential suspension of food assistance due to a severe funding shortage. Mendez emphasized, “Our reliance on donors is now more critical than ever.”
Despite this generous financial backing, the WFP urgently needs an additional 10 million USD to avoid discontinuation of aid to refugees in November. This funding is vital to maintain the provision of monthly food assistance at its current levels until the year’s end.
The WFP reported that “thanks to Germany and other donors, the WFP has distributed 108 million USD to over 465,000 refugees through monthly cash assistance from January to September 2023. This enables refugees to meet their basic food needs and daily expenses. Germany stands as the second-largest global donor to the WFP and one of the top contributors to the WFP in Jordan.”
