Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz has voiced his country’s support for initiating negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union (EU) and its commitment to assisting Ukraine in necessary reforms.
Scholz conveyed this message to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a phone call on Thursday, according to the German government.
Chancellor Scholz emphasized that Ukraine’s future lies within the European Union, underlining Germany’s continued support for Ukraine, including in the military sector.
This support will be coordinated closely with European and international partners.
Currently, Ukraine, like its neighbor Moldova, is awaiting a decision on commencing accession negotiations.
The European Commission recommended this step-in principle two weeks ago, but it requires approval from EU member states.
The decision is expected to be made during the upcoming regular summit of the EU on December 14th and 15th of this year.
Germany’s backing for Ukraine’s EU aspirations underscores the importance of strengthening ties between the European Union and Ukraine.
As Ukraine continues its journey towards European integration, the support of key EU members like Germany plays a pivotal role in facilitating this process and promoting stability and prosperity in the region.
